The moment becomes powerful when he says that he hears you and the nation hears you. He uses iambic pentameter and that sets a tone to the short speech. I think moments likes that are what brings our nation closer. It makes us want to stand together and not lose hope.

I agree with you. Speeches like these can help kick start a healing process by bringing the nation together. When everyone stands by one another, it makes the faith in their country so much stronger. I also agree that he uses iambic pentameter, causing people to hang on to his every word. With his word choices and infliction on certain phrases it keeps the audience intrigued and ready to change the nation for good.

I agree moments like this bring people together. After 911 America's moral was low I feel this speech brought it back up. People wanting to help each other and go on to greatness. This was a good moral speech.

I agree completely. Our country always does its part to help out other countries in any way we can which helps solidify this. Speeches like these are really inspiring. Especially, when instead of standing by and watching you know that we can help other countries through hardships.

I agree with you also! Also it shows emotion and whenever he has repetition it makes you listen more to the words he's saying. My favorite part is whenever they all start charting " USA USA USA" cause it shows he brought them all together as one.

That the fact his speech was not script made me realize that what he was saying was sincere, it showed that he really cared. When he says that the people who did this will pay told me that he now really did care and wanted everyone to be together at this tough moment. He repeated a few things at moments which allowed me to understand what was happening, I caught words that I hadn't paid attention too

I think in moments of darkness such as 9/11, this is exactly the kind of thing people want and need to hear. When a leader addresses the situation people feel comforted and safe. Presidents have power but not as much as the common person believes them to; moreover, comforting the nation is a more realistic responsibility. The President is acting as a calming force during the confusion.

I second this idea that it was the presidents job to be there for his nation. Also to show that when bad things happen good people have to step up in leadership. The presidents job as a comforter was successful.

I agree 110% with this. People are wanting to hear that we are going to fight back. They don't want to hear people grieve. They want that strength and confidence that the event would not tear us apart, it would only bring us closer

The one specific moment that makes this powerful is when Bush replies to a person that says "I can't hear you" by saying "But I can hear you." This makes the speech powerful because it gives people a reassurance that they aren't being ignored. One rhetoric technique Bush uses is tone shift. He uses this technique by starting off the speech very slow and sad by reflecting on the recent attack. However, as the speech progresses, his tone gets stronger and more confident. This is affective because it lifts people's spirits by guiding them to unite as a nation to recover from the traumatizing event that had just taken place.

i agree with you! i never thought about how his tone shifts throughout the speech, but now i see it and i agree that that does make the speech have a more powerful affect. and i never really paid attention to the part about him not being able to hear them, but now i see how he is reassuring them that he is listening and the nation is listening. the tone of his voice rallies the crowd and at that moment they kind of unite, and i think that makes the speech very effective. also that reflecting on the attack and then talking about what will happen in the future is a good technique to build up the affectiveness of his speech.

I agree with this. At first I thought Prezi George bush was being a smart aleck. But then I realized he was being serious and actually meant a lot with it. This affects millions of people and that's the best part about it. He's not speaking to just a tiny crowd but a whole nation and having that effect on them.

I completely agree with this. He first tries to comfort them in one way. However when he realizes that that isn't working he changes to something that his audience will better respond to. He uses tone to do this. And it is very effective.

i think that during his speech he is trying to connect with the people and to let them know that he thanks them for all that they have done for the country. he uses iambic pentameter to express his emotions and i think that makes the speech more powerful. his body language plays a big part of his speech i think because his arm is wrapped around a firefighter. He is lettting the people know that he understands how hard this time is and to let them know he is here to comfort the people, making the people feel safe. i think the most powerful part of the speech is when he says "we hear you", and the crowd majorly reacts to this.

I agree with you. He is grateful for all the people who have helped with the recovery of this attack on the United States. Him standing by the firefighter is a great example of how he is grateful and how we should be toward the firefighters and other protective forces in our community and in the nation today. Also, body language and iambic pentameter are just two of the many ways that he made this speech effective. His words convey a message that impact the entire United States and that is why there was a big reaction.

I'm not quite sure that it's the iambic pentameter that makes it so powerful. I think it's moreso the repetitive structuring of the speech and the repetition that really gives it it's power.

I completely agree with you. He wants to show the group of people that did this to our country what we're made of. Everything President Bush said was true. The coolest part of the entire speech was the fact that he wasn't being televised from DC but was in NY. Actually showing his love for the country.

I definitiy agree with Raven! His body language caught my eye immediately, the way that his arm is around the firefighter shows that he cares. He's trying to show everyone that he's going through it all just like everyone around is. That he's no different from the people around him.

During this speech, he is trying to tell the people that he is grateful to have them and what they've done for the country. The moment that is most powerful is when he says that "the people that knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon". That's powerful because that shows that we are determined to show them what America can do. He uses iambic pentameter to show his emotions and how he feels. The way he stands and the way he talks has a big part in this speech. The way he stands by the firefighter, the way he raises his voice to get this point across, and the way he words his sentences is very important in this speech. It shows that he has a heart and truly understands what an impact is has on the United States.

I agree with that statement. I think with him being by the fire fighter the whole time shows how he cares about his workers. I also think that when he talks to the man in the crowd is the most powerful moment also. It shows that he cares about the safety of the country. And if someone is going to attack us, then they can expect to have the same thing coming to them.

I agree. That's a very good point. I wasn't really paying attention to the way that he was standing and how he was standing by the firefighter. He wanted to put emphasis on the fact that we all stand by each other and support each other as American's. The way he uses iambic pentameter was a great way to portray his emotions.

George W. Bush made this a powerful moment by not even saying a word. The entire speech his arm was wrapped around the shoulder of a firefighter who was helping search for bodies after the attack. This gesture shows how grateful he was for the hard work that these innocent people were doing. We can see that George W. Bush and Martin Luther King Jr. used similar rhetorical techniques when delivering their speeches. They both speed up and slow down the pace of their words to show the emotion of the words they are saying. If the audience can make an emotional connection to what the speaker is saying it makes their speech effective. One major reaction to this specific speech was when Bush said "but I can hear you." When he was saying this his words were slower so the audience could hear, and when an audience hears what they like they applaud.

The moments when he is speaking to America and saying he hears us makes us feel like we matter. He have us a mood that we will get through everything. He talks to us at a time where we scared and in danger. He tells us that he will make them pay for what they did. That makes him a good speaker.

I personally think there are three moments in this speech that can be classified as powerful moments. One is the fact that he is in New York City in person and speaking through a bull horn. He could have easily given a speech like that through a camera at a podium. Second is the fact that his arm is around the firefighter the whole time he is speaking. That shows that he cares about his workers and appreciates them. And finally, the third is the most obvious when he tells the man in the crowd that he heard them and the people that did that will here them. That tells the country that he is not going to accept being attacked with out fighting back.

There are many different powerful moments in this speech, one being that he was actually in New York . He. Could've been in the White House Speaking but instead he was there at the sight, probably worried himself but trying to get other people to realize this action will notbe forgotten, the people WILL do something about it. Another thing is how he has his arm wrapped around the firefighter, showing comfort, and that he cares. This speech and the Martin Luther King Jr. Speech have a lot in commen, like how they

I think that there were plenty of powerful moments in this speech. The one that stood out to me was what he said in reply to the people that said they couldn't hear him. After saying that he could hear them, he went on to say that the people who knocked down the towers would also hear us. He is showing that America will not let something like that happen and not do anything. He wants everyone to know that we will do anything and everything to keep America safe.

i think that this speech is very powerful because of what he's saying and because of how his tone comes across it's like he's not the president he's one of the workers and he's really trying to boost there spirits which is what people needed at that time and just the fact that generally cared , because he didn't do the whole stand at a podium and try to give bogus crap he was there with his arm around a firefighter and he was saying that the workers and the victims would be heard by the nation and especially by the people who torn down the towers

This speech is powerful in how he says I can hear you to a person in the audience. He speaks in iambic witch really gives infissis on words that he try's to get across. His overall point it that America will not let something like this happen again. This was a speech that have America some of its moral back. This I believe was another main reason of the speech.

In the middle of the speech when George Bush says "The people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon." and then the repetition of USA after that gave me chills. He gave us hope with the foreshadowing of what he was going to do to get back. It's not even a question on whether this moment was effective or not. Of course it was effective when the president gave us hope after such a tragic time. That sentence brought a group of people together and to repeat our nations name at the top of their lungs. Now that's effective.

I think that this speech is very powerful, especially in a moment of tragedy it was delivered. It becomes most powerful when he says "the people that knocked these buildings down will hear us soon". I think this speech is very powerful and shows hope and love for our country. When president Bush says "the people who knocked these buildings down will hear us soon." This showed all the men and women of the country that there is hope and that we will get the people who did this to our country. It also made the men and women searching for bodies want to get straight back to work and help everyone they could. President Bush didn't seem as if he was a leader in the speech but a friend and someone who wanted to help.

This speech becomes powerful to me whenever Bush says "the people who did this will pay" it shows that he truely does care. Also the repetition of them all shouting "USA USA USA" shows they all came together as one and aren't as down as they were before they have hope now. It's just truely a really great speech that has lots of emotion in it. And I think it touch's everyone somehow or another.

I think this speech was a very effective moment. I asked my parents if they remembered George W. Bush's speech and they said yes. My dad then quoted the section of the announcement where Mr. Bush says, "and the people who knocked all of these buildings down, will hear from all of us soon." To me, since my father was able to quote it, was the most powerful phrase. The fact that George Bush was not originally planning to speak, and ending up speaking, makes the entire message even more sincere. The words were not scripted, and they can from his heart. Where the emotions from the tragedy of 9/11 were still fresh.

The most effective technique used in the speech, in my opinion, is the repetition and parallel structure. It's not so much the meter of the words that made it powerful, but the repetition of the "will hear us" line, and how he emphasizes it by slowing it down.
