Listen to the following song. What sense of feeling do you have after listening to this? What is it that you think evoked this feeling from you? Go back and listen to the lyrics? Is your feeling what the song writer wanted to achieve? How do you know this? What can this mean about the power of music and poetry?

I don't really like the song. Mainly because its country bluegrass ish. It's got that feeling of old people if you ask me. Like, it's for another time. I don't get the lyrics though. What's he necessarily trying to get across. There's no point, if he's talking to someone who's passed or broke away from him a long time ago. Then towards the end he got kind of fast. I don't like it. At all lol.

I never thought it was bluegrass actually. I thought of 80's music or blues. The harmonica part gave me the blues idea. You probably think of old people because its an old song. He's trying to sing about someone who left him. That's sort of a point.

I disagree with you on a lot of things, actually. There is a point to this song, but its not necessarily through the lyrics. So, when you say you don't get the lyrics, that's the point. The beat of the music and happy, cheery feel is what you're supposed to focus on, not what he's saying. You tried too hard to decipher what he was trying to say rather than actually 'feeling' the music. Which is why I don't think you were very fond of this song, well, other than obvious musical taste reasons.

I guess your right about that Madeline. I guess I didn't take to much attention to the actual song beside the lyrics. The song itself might be better if I listened to it a second time. 5 sentences right? I'm done.

This song is actually pretty awesome and I agree with Madeline that the feeling of it is enough to make a person like listening to it. I like the meaning of the lyrics, that everyone else seemed to fail to grasp, however I cannot relate to the lyrics because I'm not in the music industry and I'm not fully aware of how horribly corrupt it is. I think I would like this song more if I were a singer/songwriter.

It makes me think of the girl I love. I think the lyrics themselves talk about a woman he is in love with and maybe is having some issues with her. Maybe the singer did want to achieve it. Maybe he just wrote the song because that's what he was feeling himself. With the power if music and poetry we can control other people's emotions and make them feel our own.

I feel kind of like happy and peppy. I think the beat provoked this feeling. I do hate this music however. I would try to to listen to the lyrics again but I don't understand what he is saying. I think the feeling that he wanted to created has been created but I don't feel it. I known this because of the beat of the song. This says that poetry and music can trigger emotion and make you feel a certain way.

Well first off, I would like to say that obviously you all haven't listened to a lot of country or bluegrass because that is DEFINENTLY not the style of this song, haha. Anyways, when I first listened to the song, it made me feel really happy and cheery from the tempo but I couldn't really understand what he was saying. So, I googled the lyrics and he is, in fact just saying a lot of nothing really. He starts out by saying "It doesn't matter what I say, so long as I sing with inflection", which gives me the idea that the whole point of this song is to dig into your emotions with the music and tempo rather than the lyrics, which he does a very good job of doing. He tries to 'convey some inner truth of vast reflection' by letting your own mind explore the meaning of this song with your own personal memories or ideas. This song is quite genius actually, and I love the whole idea behind it.

I agree with you. This definitely isn't country or bluegrass. But I also agree with the fact that this song is genius. Through the lyrics, even though you don't know what he's saying conveys the point of the song. You don't necessarily have to understand the lyrics if you can understand the beat/tempo that the song is giving off to the listener.

I think what you are saying is the best. He says in the lyrics what he says doesn't matter as long as he sings the best he can. He's not trying to convey something with words but the tone he uses. The beat of the song is uplifting and upbeat not slow and deep low notes. when I listened to this song it reminded me of the thrift shop because at first you cant really know what he is saying and when you do it's all nonsense anyway, but we still like it because its upbeat and catchy.

I think that this song has a whole different purpose than what people assume it is. I think the meaning of the song has to do with the music, not the song. The singer is just rambling the lyrics off and the lyrics have no real meaning. The music is upbeat and happy, which gives you a warm and happy feeling. I like this idea, I think it lets you be creative and imaginative and be connected with the song in your own personal way.

Well after looking the song up and reading the lyrics I found out that at one point he's trying to get something across but at other times he's just rambling off one thing after another. So it leaves me with a mixed feeling of the song. Kind of like a mixed interperpreatation. Or howerever that word is spelled.

After hearing the song, I feel happy. Music does that to you. Whatever the beat or lyrics convey is what you feel after the song is over. This is obviously an upbeat song, so I feel happy. The meaning behind the song is not in the lyrics but in the beat of the music. The power of music and poetry is the same because they are the same thing even though people have different opinions about it.

I think that the writer was trying to say that no matter what happens your heart brings you back. like when you hear a song then it brings back a memory of something. and I think he did that because his voice seems kind of sad almost so it can relay a sad memory but then the tempo is upbeat but can also make u happy or even if you like this kind of music dance. and that's exactly what poetry/ songs are about to get you thinking or to put the words into your own meaning

OH MY GOD I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY THAT THIS IS 90'S MUSIC AND IS ROCK (you're welcome). Personally I would've went with Hootie and the Blowfish or Pearl Jam... but the 90's ruled music wise. And yes, the lyrics are meaningless. This is because the title of the song has a double meaning children. A hook, when musically speaking, means that basically whatever the singer is singing about is pointless.

Honestly, I couldn't comprehend a word I was hearing. The beat isn't too bad though. It made me feel somewhat happy, although aggravated that I didn't know what I was listening too. I think the artist is trying to portray music in itself can bring back memories. Hence the hook of a song? It makes me feel intensity, the emotion through the song is super STRONG. Poetry expresses Feelings and this song did just that. The music even portrayed the mood. I actually kind of like this song too. " Leave The Lies Unspoken, Scream The Truth."

I don't think this song was really meant to bring back memories only because I don't think the lyrics were really emphasized in this song. It focused more on the beat than anything. Unless you actually listened to this song with somebody and you both knew the beat, I don't think this will really bring back memories.

I agree, you can definitely tell he was not wanting you to think so much about the lyrics since he was so quiet and hard to understand. The way he made the beat overtake the lyrics shows somethings aren't going to be seen (or heard) as easily as others. In poetry, many things aren't going to be obvious, you're going to have to think outside the box. Every good artist/poet aren't going to put things out there as much as they will make you think about the point of the poem/song.

I like the song its a calming song. He's not yelling at us like some artist and his voice is smooth. The artist's words however are different he is trying to "Still my confession draws you near/To confuse the issue I refer/To familiar heroes from long ago." He is telling us he is trying to get us to think differently about what he is talking about. He also talks about how "the hook brings you back". What the hook brings us back to I don't know but I bet its what we believe id true no matter what anybody says.

This song has an upbeat and happy tone about it. I didn't understand what he was saying with the lyrics, but that shows sometimes you don't have to focus on the lyrics as much as you do the tone. I like how he chose to make the focus to listen to the tempo rather than him singing. I think that the singer/songwriter is not meaning for his song to mean anything. It's to prove the corruption in the music industry. The hook might be the only thing that makes sense in the entire song and that's what pulls you to listen to it more. The music industry is only wanting you to sell out your ideas. I think the emotion isn't necessarily evoked from the lyrics, but from the motion that the music takes harmonically. I could get all complex and start talking music theory, but that would ruin the point. The tension build and release is what makes the song feel emotional, and the lyrics do play a role. They're the icing on top, really. They add the meaning.

If you don't then just make a beat or something without lyrics.
