1) Yes I definitely think the conflict could have been prevented. If the UN or the USA would have stepped in, there were many many lives that could be spared.
2) He does include specific dates? He says the exact day and time when many of the main events happen. I'm not sure what you mean by this question.

why did he press further when the man said he could keep his hotel open
